This is the standard advice, based on multiple studies and public health guidelines. A newspaper published Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine analyzed medical records from nearly 150,000 Canadian pregnancies to tease out how a female parent'due south age influences the effects of a shorter-than-recommended interval between pregnancies.

For older moms in a bustle, the bad news is that the report adds evidence that conceiving within 12 months of a birth does mean heightened health risks for both mother and child. Simply epidemiologist Laura Schummers, who led the inquiry while at Harvard and is now a postal service-doctoral fellow at the Academy of British Columbia, says there's practiced news for you here besides:

"The optimal spacing window that nosotros found was one to two years after the delivery of one child until the conception of the next pregnancy," she says. "That's when we found the lowest take a chance for both mothers and babies." "In fact," Schummers says, "we found that there were risks of adverse baby outcomes for women of all ages.

"The risks to the babies were higher amidst younger women, which was consequent with the team's hypothesis. But risks to the mothers were higher among older women — indeed, only older mothers incurred higher risks to their own health by getting significant over again and so soon.

Later accounting for other factors that could bulldoze these numbers, Schummers says, the stats shake out like this:

• For women 35 years or older who conceived just six months afterwards a nativity, 6.2 per thou experienced serious illness or injury, including decease. Wait xviii months and that gamble dropped to 2.6 per per one thousand. So, small accented numbers but a dramatic difference.

The research turned up a similar blueprint for premature birth: A short pregnancy interval raises the hazard for all women, but particularly for younger women. The take chances for them dropped from 53 per thousand at a six-month interval to 32 per k at an 18-calendar month interval. For women over 35, the gamble dropped from 50 per thousand at half dozen months to 36 per 1000 after 18 months.

For now, she says, her team hopes these new findings can help women make decisions within their own personal contexts, and in consultation with their medical teams. The information may be particularly helpful for older women, she says, because they more often decide to have short pregnancy intervals on purpose.

"And so if you lot're making that kind of decision on purpose," she says, "it's easier to say, 'You know, let'due south wait some other three months.' "
